Using AI in 40k part1
I am going to touch on the controversial here. The use of AI in the hobby. This is a subject that has come up lately. I will be giving my brief thoughts and an overview of some of the ways AI can be used as a hobby tool. In general I am against AI for à whole host of reasons. That said I also believe the increasing use of AI in society is inevitable. I also tend to have a strong negative reaction to anyone forcing their beliefs on me and as a result try not to do so to others. If you want to use AI cool, if you don't cool. I leave it as a matter of personal choice. With that qualifier out there let's look at some of the uses for AI in our hobby.
2. Terrain inspiration- Honestly there is a ton of AI slop and generalized images out there. There is also some very good AI art out there, I have included a few I have liked below. They have served as inspiration for future terrain projects. I have considered buying a toy combine and converting it into a industrial harvester as well as grain silos. AI art can be used for terrain inspiration in both the building and painting of terrain. Below are some pieces I have found to be good for this purpose. Although I think the terrain footprints of 11th edition do present a challenge to adopting some of these ideas.
3. Propaganda posters- I have also found AI propaganda posters set in 40k useful to be scrolled down, printed and added to terrain to further the atmosphere and immersion of the setting. Alternatively you can even have a few printed out adorning your gaming space to set a tone. Below are some examples.
4. Lore guide and order of battle creation- curious about theoretical garrison sizes and composition. Needing a bit more background for a campaign you are planning. AI can provide you with great prompts and ideas for narrative gaming. Personal choice for me is to use it as a starting point for me to hone and refine. Below is a literal example of that as well as a project idea for developing what a pdf force of chapter serfs on a imperial feudal world would look like.
5. Story inspiration- some of the good 40k AI can be used for story inspiration to be set in your own narrative. See examples below
As you can see these images invoke a story that you can then write and use as background for your own narrative campaign. This concludes this first post in a series about using AI in Warhammer 40k. I hope you have enjoyed it and found it useful.
