Angel Raid on Firebase Viper

Grenada Reconquest- Iberian Campaign- Iberia- Firebase Viper-  Responding to the request for aid a lone thunderhawk of the Apocalypse Angels Chapter risked the tremendous AA fire in order to drop a unit of Vanguard Veterans into Firebase Viper.  The Apocalypse Angels quickly destroyed the manticore artillery thus accomplishing their mission.  They also slew a number of Stygian guard soldiers before using their jump pack to escape before Stygian armor units could target and overwhelm them.  Firebase Viper was left adrift in bloodshed and disarray from the sudden raid.

Interdiction from Firebase Viper

Grenada Reconquest- Iberian Campaign- Iberia- south of Firebase Viper-  Advanced elements of the 3rd Anglican Guard regiment sent to reinforce the badly mauled 5th Anglican Guard regiment come under heavy artillery fire from Firebase Viper after having been spotted by an Alpha Legion LRRP team.  The serious disruption to Imperial supply lines and the utter domination held by the manticore batteries saw the Imperial high command send out an appeal for aid.

Dawn surprise assault on Firebase Viper

Grenada Reconquest- Iberian Campaign- Iberia- Firebase Viper-  With the dominance of Stygian Artillery the 5th Anglican Guard regiment attempted a new tactical approach to overcoming the firebase.  During the night Anglican infantry attempted to infiltrate up to the firebase in order to launch a surprise assault at dawn.  As dawn came only a few of the Anglican units were close enough to launch the assault.  The rest came racing up only to run into a artillery barrage that devastated them and turned them back.  The same barrage isolated the infiltrating Anglican guard units cutting off their line of retreat.  The Anglican thus trapped attacked fearlessly but were eventually all cut down.  The Second assault on Firebase Viper had failed and the route to the capital still barred.

armor clash outside firebase Viper

Grenada Reconquest- Iberian Campaign- Iberia-  Stygian guard units clash in a running battle with units from the 5th Anglican guard regiment outside the road to the planetary capital and firebase Viper.  The brutal clash saw heavy casualties inflicted by both sides before Stygian forces withdrew back towards the protection of Firebase Viper.  The Anglican 5th Regiment was slow to pursue the Stygian forces which allowed some of the surviving armor to be dug in around the firebase.  Col. Gough of the 5th Anglican Guard regiment responded that his casualties had been so high that he had needed to reorganize rather than pursue the Stygian forces at his later court marshal prior his assignment within a penal legion.

Daemonic Assault

Grenada Reconquest- Iberian Campaign- Iberia-  Bloodcrushers unleashed by an Alpha Legion LRRP team launches an assault on a reinforcing platoon of the 5th Anglican regiment.  The daemonic cavalry was able to inflict serious losses on the Imperial force and sent many of them to panicked flight.  (Those that fled were later executed for cowardice after interrogation)  The repeated unleashing of daemonic forces upon Imperial forces had a negative effect on morale as well as complicating casualty expectations and logistics.  Extra commissars were assigned on Iberia to address the morale issue.

strafing a stygian armor force

Grenada Reconquest- Iberian Campaign- Iberia- A Stormtalon from the Apocalypse Angels chapter strafes a stygian force on Iberia.  With the Imperial forces maintaining almost complete control of the air they were able to successfully engage and devastate Stygian troop movements eliminating mobility from the Stygian defense and ensuring that reserves could not be brought up to plug holes the Imperials cut through Stygian lines.

overrunning the op

Grenada Reconquest- Iberian Campaign- Iberia-  With the advance stymied by the Stygian OP (Observation Post) and artillery fire a new approach was needed.  An Anglican Scion LRRP (Long Range Recon Patrol) team was sent out at night to infiltrate close to the Stygian outpost and launch a dawn assault on the facility.  The Imperial LRRP team easily got within range and caught the Stygian observation team by surprise killing a number of them and routing the rest and in so doing opened up the path for further Imperial advances.

Halting the imperial advance from the OP

Grenada Reconquest- Iberian Campaign- Iberia-  Having established an OP (Observation Post) in the ruins of a mining outpost a lone stygian soldier watches from the tower for any sign of the imperial advance.
finally spotting advancing forces on the horizon the stygian sentry calls down to his commander below giving him a spotting report.  The Stygian officer then vox's the spot report to mobile artillery within range of the advancing imperials.

With accurate information coming in real time the Stygian artillery pounds the advancing imperials until they are forced back leaving the dead and a number of burning wrecks behind.  The stygian ability to observe and pound imperial troop movements threatens to turn the fighting into a stalemate that favors the Stygian defenders.
Even worse from the Imperial perspective is the fact that any attempt to renew the advance will likely result in high casualties for little to no gain.  For the moment the bulk of Imperial forces are stopped.

Shelling the imperial advance

Grenada Reconquest- Iberian Campaign- Iberia-  With the Imperial force spotted by a Stygian insurgent/militia troop, the contact is reported via encoded transmission to Stygian artillery harassment units.  These Artillery pieces operated on a shoot and scoot principle that saw them act as a constant thorn to the imperial advance.  First shelling them inflicting casualties and delay before scurrying off before return fire could hit them and then repeating the process a couple more miles down the road.  These mobile artillery harassment units became a priority target for Imperial LRRP teams very quickly.
