The cult of the Steel serpents was originally formed from a adeptus mechanicus skitarri assault cohort. The cohort was placed under the Magos Dominus of Arctus IV. The magos would be later declared a heretech and excommunicated for his actions and beliefs. The infamous Technomancer of Arctus IV would flee that world and seek sanctuary with the Alpha Legion after his reign of terror in the Arctus subsector was ended by the combined imperial forces of the astra militarum, adeptus mechanicus, and a Black Templar crusade force.
Amongst the Alpha Legion and the Dark mechanicus the remnants of the cohort formed the steel serpent cult and began accepting acolytes from roving heretechs and scavengers into their ranks following augmentation. The swift movements and brutal close combat capabilities of the cult soon attracted the attention of the Alpha Legion. Lord Magwar had his forces give the cult additional assassination and infiltration training. Eventually the cult pledged itself at the Alpha Legion's insistence to the newly formed House Harrowstorm. There the cult functioned as infantry support for the chaos knights and as ready assassins for the iconoclast fiefdom earning themselves a fearsome reputation.
