When the watch knights chapter crusading strike force engaged in the Stygian wars , they did so under their chapter banner. This banner was carried by a lone knight of the chapter referred to as the ancient. The ancient was always chosen amongst the oldest and longest serving of the non officer knights. The knight chosen though always a warrior of renown in the watch knight chapter would then give up his name and identity in order to be the chosen. The ancient, the living embodiment of their chapter ideals. Some whisper of further rites undergone by the ancient at the hands of the chaplains and chapter librarians that further fortify the soul of the ancient. Such reports however are unconfirmed.
