Dark communes

 

The Alpha Legion and the Stygian Empire made extensive use of cults throughout the Stygian Wars.  They were used as both a fifth column and as a source of military recruits.  Dark Communes tended to direct these cults and served as a liaison between the cults and the Stygian Empire or Alpha Legion.

Often such cults were led by a dark priest or psycher, or a combination of the two.  Often cult guardians would be armed with accursed weapons and act as a bodyguard while another was given a profane banner or sigil blessed by the ruinous powers and worshipped by the cult.  These cult communes were often fiendishly clever and dangerous often masterminding and leading brutal insurgencies.  They were a high priority target for inquisitors and other imperial officials.
