Battle for FOB Ajax-Zaragosan War

 

FOB Ajax construction site- Ulland province Zaragoza.    Lt Vespasian led a force of Watch Knights alongside Archmagos Saronic and his mechanicum forces constructing a base for the pdf.  Suddenly a force of Black Legion could be seen approaching.  Vespasian ordered to make ready for battle cursing that the base defenses were not powered up and completed yet.

     Grimm ordered his force forward eager for vengeance.  He would destroy this base before it became operational and regain the momentum in this war. Especially he thought with the chaos knight Mortis Rex spearheading the assault.

Grimm ordered the advance and moved his forces up in haste.  The imperials were mostly hidden under cover and his forces lacked good shots.  Still his forces quickly secured many of the outer fortifications. The vindicator took a hull down position and blasted some admech kataphrons on the Imperial right flank.  The blast shredded two of the cyborg warrior constructs and peppered the third with shrapnel.

Vespasian drew a second glance at the chaos knight and Black Legion force approaching him.  He sent a vox report to Captain Scipio with a strep then ordered his forces forward.  They needed to retake the fortifications on the far perimeter and keep the Black Legion at bay and the FOB viable.  Skittari and kataphrons under Archmagos Saronic advanced puring fire into Black Legion forces.  Arc rifles damaged the vindicator and bathing it in dangerous electric feedback.  A squad leapt out of a impulser and with plasma incinerators blew apart a 5 man squad of traitor marines as the impulser blasted the towering chaos knight with a rocket.  The blast momentarily rocked the colossal death machine before it settled down it's visor glaring at the apc.  The desolaters led by Librarian Fabian took aim at a lumbering maulerfiend on the left flank.  The missiles slammed into it.  The war machine stumbled wreathed in flames yellowing daemonic screams over vox emitters.  Warp lightning lashed out from Fabian's staff and enveloped the daemon engine.  The beastmachine shuddered and fell lifeless to the ground.  Lt. Vespasian led his intercessor squad into the fortified strong point at Grimm and his chosen.  Bolter fire ravaged the chosen sending a number of them to the ground with horrific wounds.

With a thunderous Crack and flash of teleport light Grimm's reinforcing forces led by the daemon Vargul teleported behind the Watch Knights left flank.  Fabian sensing the arriving daemon had the desolaters turn and fire into the warpflare.  Vargul materialized only to be hit by two missiles tearing a massive hole in his form as they detonated.  Mortis Rex blew apart a ballistis dreadnought with his cannon before slamming into the impulser shattering it.  The terminators charged Fabian and the desolaters.  The desolaters fell under the savage blows from the terminators.  Fabian however deflected the blows with his staff and slammed it into the chest of one terminator.  Channeling his will through the staff a kinetic Shockwave from the staff blew the terminator apart.  Grimm and the chosen continued the firefight with Lt. Vespasian.  On the right flank cultists charged Skittari hacking several of the admechbtroopers apart.  Grimm roared in triumph revenge would be his.

The Watch Knights held firm.  The redemption dreadnought Balbus slammed into the daemon Vargul and ripped it apart.  An assault squad slammed into the obliteraters hacking the one brute down and wounding another.  Techmarine Archimedes attacked the terminators cutting one down before Fabian fell wounded.  Grimm and the chosen fought Vespasian.  Vespasian hacked aside Grimm's staff and ran him through.  Grimm fell back badly wounded as his chosen fell around him.  The hellblaster squad poured fire into Mortis Rex burning holes in it.  With Grimm down a sense of uncertainty swept across the Black Legion forces.

Into the sudden void Harkon bellowed orders over the vox.  Simple terrible orders, retrieve Grimm.  A warband of beastmen arrived to help and Harkon dispatched them to burn the outer defenses.  He knew the admech forces on the Imperial right flank had decimated the Black Legion forces there.  Kataphrons had charged and cut down the last cultists.  The center was in Imperial hands and only on the left was there any hope.  Harkon knew his own mission parameters meant that Grimm needed to survive.  He led his squad into the hellblaster squad between him and where Grimm lay wounded.  The Black legionnaires hacked down the hellblasters.  The terminators cut down Techmarine Archimedes while the last obliterater was hacked apart by a Watch Knights assault squad.  Mortis Rex and the mutilaters charged into Vespasian and his squad cutting down 9 marines.  Vespasian managed to kill one mutilater.  But the others reached where Grimm lay.

The redemptor dreadnought charged the terminators crushing them as it attempted to reach Vespasian.  The assault squad fell upon the mutilaters with a fury seeing them off while another Watch Knights squad hurled explosives into the rear of Mortis Rex setting it ablaze.   But just then Harkon reached Grimm.

Harkon lifted Grimm and ordered the retreat.  Grimm lived but was unconscious a terrible wound in his chest.  Mortis Rex kept the imperials at bay with it's deadly laser.  

Vespasian didn't order a pursuit.  The black legion was retreating, but a tribe of beastmen were pillaging the site.  Vespasian led his forces in a sweep that saw the mutant tribe slaughtered and scattered.  Fabian and Archimedes were wounded.  It was a costly victory but it was a victory.  FOB Ajax would be finished and garrisoned.  Perhaps the Black Legion with it's commander down would flee this world or succumb to infighting.  It was a victory worth the price.
